Memoirs of a Jaipur trip

Having been born and brought up in Delhi, it is kinda expected that I would have visited most of the tourist spots around Delhi. But its strange that I got to visit Jaipur for the first time only a couple of years back !

That was an official trip and we didn’t stay over night but I had liked the place and wanted to visit again some time at leisure. So last year I made a plan to visit Jaipur with my wife and this time with an over night stay. Since it was a long weekend and it was winter time, so I thought it was the best time to visit Jaipur, and I was right. The confusion started when I had to book a hotel. I had a mid-range budget (around 2000-4000 rs. per night) and I wanted to stay for 2 nights to have a relaxed sort of get away. And since my wife is very fond of forts et al, so I was more inclined towards booking a heritage property. Did quite a bit of research on the net, there are hundreds of hotels in Jaipur and it gets really confusing to choose, especially if you are not looking for a five star property.

The choices were to book in the city or on the outskirts. On the outskirts there are a few good options including Chokhi Dhani. But then you must have your own vehicle if you want to stay in any of these and visit the forts on your own otherwise the taxi will come out to be too expensive.

Within the city, you can either book around the bus stand, which has quite a few low budget hotels or in the Bani park area, which has mid-range hotels. There are also a few around the railway station (which is not far from the bus stand). But most of these are over priced in my opinion.

Anyway, since I wanted to book a heritage property so I had narrowed down a few of those like Hotel Jai Mahal, Umaid Bhavan, Sarang Palace, Bharat Mahal, Hari Mahal Palace etc but most of these were booked for the long weekend. I finally got a booking in Hotel Bharat Mahal, and I booked it through makemytrip. It costed my around 5000 bucks for 2 nights for a deluxe room. It was an okay property, although the deluxe room was too small. When I complained this to makemytrip, they got my room upgraded to a suite for no extra cost. The suite had a bit of a royal feel to it so it turned out to be a nice experience. Also the hotel had a nice park in the compound and the breakfast was complementary, which was served in their very nice cafeteria.

There aren’t too many places to visit except for the 3 hill top forts, hawa mahal, kanak vrindavan gardens etc. We had booked a full day taxi to cover all of these spots and the chokhi dhani resort as the last destination. The Jal mahal is on the way so we had just halted the taxi on the way to have a dekko. The taxi costed us around 2000 bucks, which was a good deal I think. We had travelled to Jaipur on train by the way so we didn’t have our own vehicle.

We had covered almost everything in a single day so didn’t have much to do the next day.. just watched a movie in one of their newly constructed malls (there are just a couple of them anyway), did some shopping and relaxed in the hotel.

Overall a good trip, but then I believe all that matters is the company 🙂
